A Tradition of Excellence for 150 Years

Lough Memorials has been family-owned and operated since 1874, proudly serving families in Maryland, Virginia, West Virginia, and Pennsylvania with uniquely crafted headstones, monuments, memorials, and grave markers.

Founded by Uriah Alexander Washington Lough, the business was relocated in 1912 to 121 South Market Street and has been at its current location at 500 South Market Street in Frederick, Maryland since 1999. As the tradition of excellence continued, Uriah brought his son, Charles Lough, into the business. After Charles retired, ownership passed to two of his dedicated employees, Wilson Waltz and Frank Griffin—a testament to the strong relationships built within the company.

In 1982, the business was acquired by Merkle Monuments, another long-standing, family-owned memorial company known for its craftsmanship and care. Today, Geoffrey Merkle Irwin, grandson of Merkle Monuments founder Raymond G. Merkle, serves as one of the current owners. As a third-generation memorialist, Geoffrey continues to uphold the legacy of quality and service, both in the memorial industry and the Frederick community.

Geoffrey is a board member of the Mid-Atlantic Monument Builders and has served as a District Trustee for the Monument Builders of North America, representing DE, DC, MD, PA, and NJ. A proud Frederick resident, he also volunteers with several local organizations.

The team at Lough Memorials is equally committed to community, donating time and resources to support numerous charitable causes. For over 150 years, we have honored lives and helped families create lasting tributes that speak of love, legacy, and remembrance.

Family-Owned & Community-Focused

Lough Memorials has been a proud part of the Frederick community since 1912. As a locally operated, family-oriented business, we understand the value of personal service and lasting relationships. When you choose us, you are choosing people who care—about craftsmanship, about tradition, and about your family. We are also deeply committed to giving back, regularly supporting local charities and volunteering our time and resources to strengthen the community we’ve called home for over a century.
